Electromagnetic field quantization in nonlinear and inhomogeneous dielectrics ∗

چکیده

The electromagnetic field is quantized in nonlinear media whose dielectric functions and nonlinear susceptibilities may vary with space. Given the dielectric function and nonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field is determined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg equations we prove that Maxwell’s equations are satisfied for the field operators. When the nonlinearity goes to zero, this quantization method returns to the generalized canonical quantization procedure developed in Ref.[1] for linear inhomogeneous media. The general formalism is illustrated by applications to quantization of the second-order and third-order nonlinear quasi-steady-state processes. Alternative approach to electromagnetic field quantization in nonlinear and inhomogeneous media

A simple approach is proposed for the quantization of the electromagnetic field in nonlinear and inhomogeneous media. Given the dielectric function and nonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field is determined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg’s equations we derive Maxwell’s equations for the field operators. When the nonlinearity goes to zero,...

Three-dimensional quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersive and absorbing inhomogeneous dielectrics

A quantization scheme for the phenomenological Maxwell theory of the full electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous three-dimensional, dispersive and absorbing dielectric medium is developed. The classical Maxwell equations with spatially varying and Kramers–Kronig consistent permittivity are regarded as operator-valued field equations, introducing additional currentand charge-density operator ...

Field quantization in inhomogeneous anisotropic dielectrics with spatio-temporal dispersion

A quantum damped-polariton model is constructed for an inhomogeneous anisotropic linear dielectric with arbitrary dispersion in space and time. The model Hamiltonian is completely diagonalized by determining the creation and annihilation operators for the fundamental polariton modes as specific linear combinations of the basic dynamical variables. Explicit expressions are derived for the time-d...

Quantization of electromagnetic fields in the presence of a spherical semiconductor quantum dot and spontaneous decay of an excited atom doped in this nanostructure

In this paper we consider electromagnetic field quantization in the presence of a dispersive and absorbing semiconductor quantum dot. By using macroscopic approach and Green's function method, quantization of electromagnetic field is investigated. Interaction of a two-level atom , which is doped in a semiconductor quantum dot, with the quantized field is considered and its spontaneous emission ...

Casimir stress in an inhomogeneous medium

The Casimir effect in an inhomogeneous dielectric is investigated using Lifshitz’s theory of electromagnetic vacuum energy. A permittivity function that depends continuously on one Cartesian coordinate is chosen, bounded on each side by homogeneous dielectrics. The result for the Casimir stress is infinite everywhere inside the inhomogeneous region, a divergence that does not occur for piece-wi...
